The flying geese are central to the composition of classic quilt blocks and improvisational geometric shapes. Some symmetrical components bring order in the otherwise asymmetrical design. Geese travel for thousands of miles every year, never in doubt of the direction they’re taking. For us humans, plenty of distractions can lead us off our path. If we want to follow our dreams we need to be like the geese: know our destination and fly a steady course. I built on my original design with some minor corrections in the layout, and a different palette and color placement. The design is based on the Drunkard’s Path block, using both a traditional and a modern version, each in three different sizes, that form a variety of quarter, half, and full circles, arranged in a modern composition. The title is both a nod to the design elements as well as a reflection of how the word bubbles took on a whole new meaning during the pandemic. It was long arm quilted by Jennifer Strauser, and measures 60” x 84”. The (public) commitment of making one 6 1/2” block each day kept me motivated to also be creative in other ways and on other projects. The color palette includes 16 colors with values across 5 different hues, and an organically free-hand cut quarter circle is pieced into each tile, making all unique combinations. Color placement of the 100 blocks was a gigantic puzzle to ensure equal distribution of colors and no same colors touching each other. I thought I was done, but I had started to make improvisational tracks and experimented with some pinwheels based on Maria’s teachings. These blocks took many weeks to complete as I made them in between other things whenever I felt like just playing and improvising. In the end I incorporated them as a final circumference, arranging them in a rail fence style, and putting the pinwheel block variations in the corners. A fresh approach to the color placement and merging of the different pattern pieces creates the abstract illusion of a dropped anchor, the keel of a boat and fish in the sea. The vertical wavy quilting lines suggest water bubbles rising to the surface. This quilt was juried into QuiltCon 2021 as part of the Modern Classics exhibition. It came together over many weeks as a form of respite and distraction from the constant news stream, and combines a random set of different graphic elements, tied together by a recurring color palette. The quilt was shown at the Houston Int’l Quilt Festival (online) in Dec 2020, and was juried into QuiltCon 2021. It will be featured in an upcoming book (summer 2021) by Sandra Sider, curator at the Texas Quilt Museum, “Quarantine Quilts: Creativity in the Midst of Chaos”.
