About me…

I’m Lenny van Eijk, the artist, designer and quilt maker behind Modern Stitch Witch. While I learned to sew growing up, and periodically made use of those skills, I only discovered quilting in 2017. What started as creative stress management quickly became a hobby and then a full blown passion, and in 2019 I swapped my corporate life for a full time creative journey.

My approach to quilt making is grounded in a love for bright colors, and large scale abstract forms that invite the viewer into a world where anything can be anything, and imagination allows inventing your own story. Abstraction gives me the freedom to create without adhering to a norm or visual reality, and subconsciously express feelings and emotions I cannot put into words. Cutting up fabric and sewing it back together into abstract art gives me a sense of purpose, and it lowers my anxiety over the many unknowns and the chaotic world around me. I work very intuitively, and largely from my imagination, without taking many direct cues from the outside world. I do find inspiration from abstract art in general.

I grew up in the Netherlands and have since lived and worked in several different countries. Living in and near New York City for the past 18 years has given me an opportunity to frequently visit museums and galleries, where I love to visit modern art exhibitions. I currently live in the New Jersey “suburbs” of New York, together with my partner Scot, a professional photographer.

Why Modern Stitch Witch? I’m rooted in a strong feminist ideology that stems from personal experiences in an unequal world for women, and I hope to inspire other women to express themselves and take agency through their own abstract art. For me the witch personifies a strong feminist symbol that embodies power, wisdom, knowledge, and fearlessness; all qualities I admire, and aspire to further develop in this journey called life.
