Why Modern Stitch Witch?

“I’m rooted in a strong feminist ideology that stems from personal experiences in an unequal world for women, and I hope to inspire other women to express themselves and take agency through their own creative work. For me the witch personifies a strong feminist symbol that embodies power, wisdom, knowledge, and fearlessness; all qualities I admire, and aspire to further develop in this journey called life.”

- Lenny van Eijk

Lenny van Eijk is a Dutch-born expat to the US. A corporate career in hospitality and financial services took her from the Netherlands to Switzerland and Germany, the United Kingdom (London), and then in 2005 to New York City. What started as creative stress management, turned into a passion and a calling to work with textiles as a form of creative expression. Since 2019 she has been working full time as a studio artist. She lives in northern New Jersey just outside of New York City with her partner Scot Surbeck, a professional photographer.

Without an academic background in the arts, she has taken classes on various techniques with different teachers, and studied color theory, design and composition. And since 2023 she has been studying with renowned fiber artist and contemporary quilt maker Nancy Crow, one of the leading figures in the development of the art quilt movement since the 1970’s.  Lenny’s work has been exhibited in shows, exhibitions and museums across the US and in Europe, and appeared in several written publications.
